MRL van Dijk Architects have delivered a new 5-ward extension to the Delivery and Labour unit at the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin. The extension at 2nd floor also involved an expansion of the building above the public road at Holles Row. The solution adopted integrates with the existing LDU and ties-in to the existing services of the current building. This proposal also enabled the existing Delivery and Labour unit to continue to fully operate during the construction of the extension and then to move operations to the new extension, to allow for refurbishment of the existing Delivery and Labour unit facility.
