Creative Spark is an innovative hub that seamlessly integrates educational and creative co-working spaces. Within this dynamic building, a variety of formal and informal spaces have been purposefully designed to foster learning, collaboration, and community engagement. The facility provides a range of training and educational programmes for local creative businesses. The design for the latest addition to this project evolved around the creation of new building programme elements including a Fabrication Laboratory “Fab Lab”, co-working spaces, additional own-door office spaces, administrative office and a community café. It was a great opportunity to extend a building that VDA had designed some ten years previous. The design for the new building evolved around a concept of inter-visibility and a clear delineation between original and addition. The Fab Lab and co-working areas feature transparent doors and glass screens that allow building users to see a variety of creative processes happening around them. The Fab Lab features a long linear window that provides ample even light to the space and views to outside. The co-working space is located at first floor level and features large windows that act as a lantern at the rear of the building, taking in views of the Cooley Mountains while also demonstrating the activity that is taking place within the building to the outside world.
