The existing sewerage system discharged previously untreated sewage direct to the Castletown River Estuary. The phase 1 development was designed to treat wastewater from an equivalent population of 167,000 persons. This allows for a large amount of effluent from the brewing and food processing industries. A phase 2 is being proposed that will treat a population of 220,000.
